When are you ready to embark on your wellness journey?

Starting a wellness routine is a highly personal, magical and potentially life changing undertaking. If you’re thinking about doing so, you’ve already taken the first step towards a happier, more joy filled life. But when are you truly ready to not only get going, but make it sustainable? Getting started is usually only sustainable if you’re in the right headspace and the conditions in your life match up to the process. Avoid quick fixes, crash diets and setting unrealistic goals, these are hard to adhere to and don't encourage consistently feeling well, healthy and happy. A gradual, consistent climb towards the best version of yourself is highly possible, especially when the following four factors come into play.

1. When You Can Set Realistic Goals for Yourself

Setting goals can often require long lists of long-term ideals, some of which are slightly out of touch because we have the tendency to be extra hard on ourselves. In my experience this is a form of self-sabotage that I try to avoid at all costs. Setting realistic goals for yourself means taking simple, un-intimidating steps. You don’t have to commit to Iron Man a few months before it starts. It’s likely that not meeting the goal will knock your confidence and the wellness plan will have to start over. We all have unique bodies, circumstances and mindsets, but when you can set realistic goals, you’re on your way towards sustainable wellness. Choose one class/ exercise session next week, if you feel like more go for it!

2. When People Around You Start Questioning Your Ability to Do So

This is a tough one for me personally. At the start of my wellness journey in 2015 I had been speaking about making a change for ages. So much so that the people around me began assuming lip service, questioning whether I actually had the ability to follow through with my plans. Being teased this by my nearest and dearest (“you're never going to go to that yoga class!”) was the wake-up call I needed to get going, and here we are seven years later. Even if nobody is saying it to you explicitly, if you’re in a place where you’re doubting whether people believe in you, more importantly, where you believe in yourself, you’re truly ready to start the journey.

3. When You Have That Aha Moment

By starting to think about living more mindfully and with health in mind, you’re on your way already. It’s important to think about what your “aha” (realisation) moment is, essentially the event or reason when your words finally started to turn into action. It might actually be repeated self-talk around wanting to feel better. It could be an event or an inspirational person that encourages you to move out of a state of “hopelessness” (in the most gentle sense of the word). Jot down the moment and come back to it along your journey for extra motivation on harder days.

4. When You’re Open to Help Along the Way

A final sign that you’re ready to embark on a wellness journey is the understanding that you’re going to need help along the way. In spite of you being the centre of the process, it takes a village to live well. This includes being able to communicate and share boundaries with those around you, finding people to hold you accountable (I love being this for my holistic health coaching clients) or even just being open to having someone who has done it before recommend something to you. You don’t have to go at it alone. Our Lifestyle Manager is also designed with this in mind, especially in the weekly check-in calls. The extra tools provide additional safety nets, and before you know it you’ll be standing confidently in your process, ready never to look back again.
